Writing a book is no easy task.  If it were then there would be a lot more published writers in the world.  If you want to write a book, then be prepared for the very long and arduous task that lies ahead of you.  Writing a book is something that can’t be done in a few short weeks.  It takes months, sometimes even years.  However, once you’re done and ready to find a publisher, the feeling of accomplishment within you will make the whole journey feel worth it.

So what does it take to write a book?  It takes a lot.  Here is what you need.  If you don’t have them then you will need to work on obtaining them or developing them:

Something to write with

Having a computer or laptop is the easiest way to get your story down on the page; however, some people still prefer a good old fashioned pen and paper.  The latter choice can take a lot longer; however, it provides for a better opportunity to revise your story in the end because the book will inevitably need to be typed, which will give you a chance to go back through it.

Writing skills

You don’t need to be a writing genius, but you do need a good grasp of the English language.  You need to be able to write clearly and be able to catch your grammatical and spelling mistakes.  If you use a computer you cannot rely on the spell checker.  Yes, it can catch some mistakes, but for every mistake it catches, it misses two others.

A story

You don’t necessarily need a story that you think people are going to read, though it helps.  However, it is more important that you have a story you feel passionate about writing.  If you’re not passionate about the story you’re writing then you will most likely never finish it.

Devotion

Most often, people begin a book and never finish it because they don’t make themselves stick with it.  If you don’t want this to happen to you then make sure and set aside time each day to work on your book.  Try to write a page a day at the least.  If you can do this then you will have 365 pages within a year, enough to be considered an average size novel.

Not everyone is cut out to be a writer, no matter how much they wish to be.  But if you feel strongly that you are then the best thing you can do is write; write everyday so that your writing is constantly improving and getting better.  The first book you publish may never get written, and maybe not the second, but your third might, but you will never know unless you write.  So start writing and finish that book so that you can join the ranks of the few people who have written a book.  Trust me, it will go a lot further than it will sitting in your desk drawer unfinished.
